Thirukadaiyur Thirukadaiyur Abirami Temple

Thirukadaiyur Abirami Temple is a renowned Hindu shrine located in the village of Thirukadaiyur, in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu, India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the temple is particularly famous for its association with the legend of Sage Markandeya and the celebration of Shastiapthapoorthi (60th birthdays).

History

The temple’s history dates back over a millennium, with references found in various ancient Tamil scriptures. The presiding deity, Lord Shiva, is worshipped here as Amritaghateswarar, meaning "the Lord who holds the pot of nectar." The goddess Parvati, known as Abirami in this temple, is believed to be an incarnation of beauty and grace.

The temple gained widespread fame due to the legend of Sage Markandeya, who was blessed by Lord Shiva with eternal life at this very spot. The story recounts how Yama, the god of death, was overpowered by Shiva when he came to take Markandeya's life, leading to the deity’s title as "Kala Samhara Moorthy" (Destroyer of Death).

Thirukadaiyur is considered a sacred site for celebrating longevity rituals. Couples from all over India visit the temple to perform Shastiapthapoorthi, Bhimaratha Shanthi (70th birthday), and Sadabishekam (80th birthday) ceremonies, seeking blessings for long life and health.
